What Is Reiki Drum?
Background
Reiki Drum is a relatively modern development within the wider Reiki tradition. It was created in the late 1990s by Michael Arthur Baird, an American Reiki Master who explored how rhythmic drumming could deepen relaxation, shift brainwave states, and enhance the flow of Reiki energy. His work showed that combining steady drumming with Reiki created a powerful method for clearing stagnant energy, accessing the subconscious mind, and supporting emotional and spiritual healing.
The technique was brought to the UK in 2007 by Sarah Gregg, a Reiki Master Teacher who trained directly with Michael Baird. Sarah went on to teach and share the method widely, helping it become an established part of the Reiki community in the UK.
My own training continues this lineage. I was taught by a practitioner who trained directly with Sarah Gregg, allowing me to honour the roots of the technique while bringing my own intuitive, heart-led approach to each session.
Introduction
Reiki Drum is a powerful blend of Reiki energy and steady, rhythmic drumming. The drumbeat carries Reiki deep into the body and energy field, helping to break up stagnant energy, release blockages, calm the nervous system and restore balance.
People often experience deep relaxation, emotional release, enhanced clarity, energetic alignment, spiritual insight, and relief from physical tension. Reiki Drum can be offered in both one‑to‑one and group settings, and one‑to‑one sessions end with hands‑on Reiki to support integration.
Reiki Drum Methods
Reiki Drum Journey
A Reiki Drum journey guides you into a meditative or trance‑like state through steady rhythmic drumming, supported by the flow of Reiki energy.
This altered state of awareness allows you to access your subconscious mind, inner wisdom, and intuitive guidance. Insights, imagery, sensations, or emotions may arise as blockages release and deeper layers of healing unfold. Reiki holds the journey in a safe, supportive energetic container and assists with integration and grounding afterwards.
This method is deeply empowering and healing on all levels. It’s best approached with openness and without expectation, allowing whatever arises to unfold for your highest good.
Reiki Drum Reprogramming
This method blends intuitive drumming with carefully chosen positive affirmations to support mental and emotional transformation.
The steady rhythm quietens the conscious mind, making the subconscious more open and receptive. Affirmations are introduced to help shift unhelpful patterns, strengthen new intentions, and support clarity, confidence and focus. Reiki anchors the new energetic imprint and encourages integration.
This method is particularly supportive if you’re working to release old habits, cultivate healthier thought patterns, or align with specific goals.
Reiki Drum Healing
Reiki Drum healing combines intuitive rhythmic drumming with the gentle flow of Reiki energy to deliver a deep, restorative treatment.
The steady rhythm helps break up stagnant or blocked energy, creating space for balance and release. As the mind settles into the beat, the body drops into a deeply relaxed, receptive state. Reiki then soothes the nervous system, integrates energetic shifts and supports grounding and wholeness.
This method is ideal if you’re seeking emotional release, energetic clearing, or support with specific areas of imbalance.
There are three Reiki Drum methods, each chosen based on your preferences, intentions, and needs. Every session begins with setting an intention to anchor your focus and guide the healing process.
Session guide
What is the difference between a one-to-one and a group Reiki Drum session?
One-to-one sessions
A one‑to‑one Reiki Drum session offers a deeply personal and introspective experience. The drumming, hands-on Reiki, and overall flow of the session are tailored to your intentions, preferences, sensitivities, and needs. Close‑body drumming allows the vibrations to resonate deeply through the body, while Reiki flows through the drum, infusing each beat with healing intention. You can also choose from the three Reiki Drum approaches – healing, reprogramming, or journey work – allowing the session to be shaped around the type of support you’re seeking. The pace and intensity of the work follow your own healing process, creating space for deep relaxation, inner awareness, and energetic release.
Private group sessions
Private group sessions offer a uniquely comfortable and connected experience shared with people you know and trust. The energy in the room becomes naturally cohesive, helping everyone relax more deeply. While not as individually targeted as a one‑to‑one session, the journey is still personalised – shaped around your collective intentions, sensitivities, and the type of experience you’re seeking. Reiki energy flows naturally through the drum and into the space and hands‑on Reiki can be included to support integration.
Public group sessions
Public group sessions are less personalised, but the shared energy of the group creates a powerful sense of unity and community connection. These sessions are a beautiful way to meet others who share an interest in holistic wellbeing, and they are often more accessible and affordable. Hands‑on Reiki is not included, though Reiki energy flows naturally through the drum and into the space.
Choosing your session
Both one‑to‑one and group sessions offer meaningful benefits. The right choice depends on your needs and the type of experience you’re seeking. You can explore all options on the Signature Services page.
How will I feel during and after a Reiki Drum session?
Reiki and sound healing help you reconnect with your innate healing potential, and the experience unfolds at your own pace. Most people feel deeply relaxed during and after a session. As the body softens, the nervous system settles, the immune system is supported and the body becomes more able to heal itself.
Many people experience an expanded state of awareness, especially during quieter moments. You may notice colours, images, or memories; sensations such as warmth, coolness, tingling or gentle movement; or emotional release such as tears or joy. These are all natural signs of energetic shifting and rebalancing.
Reiki and sound healing can influence the whole being – physical, emotional, and mental. Clients often report reduced pain, improved sleep, hormonal shifts, increased energy, a brighter mood, and a greater sense of empowerment. Occasionally, deeper emotions may surface as the body clears stagnant energy. Temporary sensations such as headaches, aches, dizziness or nausea can also occur.
I hold a safe, supportive space for anything that arises. You are welcome to share your experience at any point, and you will never be rushed or judged. It’s important to feel ready for positive change and to have support around you afterwards if strong emotions surface.
After a session, there is usually a period of gentle integration. Old symptoms or emotions may briefly reappear as the body recalibrates, and things may feel a little more intense before they settle. This is a natural part of the process and typically lasts 2–3 days. During this time, drinking water and resting when you can will support your system. If you live with mental health challenges and find that difficult emotions linger, please reach out to your doctor or mental health professional for additional support.
How often should I experience Reiki Drum?
Reiki and sound healing is an individual experience, so there’s no set number of sessions. Many clients prefer monthly sessions, while others come more or less frequently – it’s completely personal. Your system will let you know when it’s time; come whenever you feel drawn.
Most people find that more than one session is helpful, as healing unfolds gradually and the body often needs time to return to balance. You could begin with a short series of three sessions, spaced around two weeks apart, to allow the body to unwind and recalibrate. After this, monthly sessions can help maintain balance and support ongoing wellbeing, especially during times of stress or transition.
Because Reiki and Sound Healing continues to integrate after each session, it’s best to allow at least a week between treatments.
Suitability
Is Reiki Drum suitable for everyone?
Reiki Drum works with similar energetic principles to Reiki and Sound Healing, so the same suitability guidance applies. You can find full details on those pages. If you’re unsure whether a Reiki Drum session is right for you, I’m always happy to talk things through.
