What Is Sound Healing?
Introduction
Sound healing is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies with the intention of bringing the mind, body and spirit into harmony and balance. It can be transmitted through toning and chanting with the voice or by using various musical instruments. It has been used for thousands of years in cultures all over the world, including the ancient civilizations of China, Egypt, Greece and India. It is a powerful, non-invasive tool which stimulates the body's natural healing mechanisms and can alleviate physical and emotional pain, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep patterns, enhance overall health and vitality, and more.
Everything in the Universe is in a state of vibration...
Sound healing is based on the concept that everything in the Universe is in a state of vibration, including the human body which is a complex vibratory system. All our organs, bones, tissues and bodily systems have their own natural vibration or resonant frequency. Together, they make up a composite frequency, like the instruments of an orchestra. When part of the body is vibrating out of ease and harmony, this affects the entire body and results in ‘dis-ease’. Correct resonant frequencies can be projected into these areas of the body to rejuvenate and restore the body’s own natural and healthy vibrations, any imbalance ceases and healing occurs.
The body's rhythms synchronise with powerful healing sounds...
Entrainment is a phenomenon of sound in which the powerful vibrations of one source actually change those of another, causing the second source to synchronise with the first. We undergo entrainment frequently, shifting and changing with the different external vibrations we are exposed to. During sound healing, if a person is physically, mentally or emotionally out of balance, their body’s rhythms will lock into the powerful healing sounds and synchronise with the frequencies being created. The energy shift, or healing that occurs as entrainment takes place, can be experienced in many different ways, such as sensations, images, colours, memories, energetic and emotional releases.
Harmonics induce an altered state of consciousness...
The Universe is alive with sound, and within all sounds are harmonics. Nearly all tones that are produced are mixtures of pure tone frequencies called partials, with the lowest frequency called the fundamental. All partials higher in frequency than the fundamental are referred to as overtones and are mathematically related to each other. The overtone series goes on infinitely, with each overtone being a geometric multiple of the fundamental, going faster and faster, higher and higher. Overtones are responsible for shaping the individual sounds we hear, and for giving instruments and voices their uniqueness. When we hear sounds rich in harmonics, it induces an altered state of consciousness, slowing down our brainwave patterns so that we feel deeply relaxed and enter a dreamlike state. In this state, our breathing, heart rate and blood pressure decrease which helps our immune system function more efficiently, reduces our stress hormones and triggers the release of feel-good chemicals in the brain.
Intervals are musical medicine for our body...
If we sing or play two different notes, one after the other or at the same time, we create a musical interval. When we listen to all the intervals in the natural musical scale it is profoundly healing, with each musical interval having a different effect on our body, emotions and mind. Harmonising intervals have a relaxing effect on the body and bring it into balance. Dissonant intervals can sound uncomfortable but shift stagnant energy and bring up unresolved emotions in the body. Each interval emits a frequency that resonates with a specific part of our being and the space between this sound allows the absorption of the vibration and healing to take place. The intervals are musical medicine for our body, naturally retuning the body to its proper harmonic vibration and rhythm and restoring balance.
Frequency plus intention equals healing...
The ability of consciousness (our thoughts, beliefs, feelings or purpose) to be encoded upon sound waves and amplify their effect is an extremely important phenomenon of sound healing. Jonathan Goldman states that “it is not only the frequency of the sound that creates the effect, it is also the intention of the person making and receiving the sound that causes the outcome”. Spiritual elements may be incorporated into sound healing sessions, including the use of affirmations or other forms of intention setting to direct healing energy towards the recipient. If pure sound with a pure intention is created then healing will occur.
The importance of silence...
Sound is a subtle energy. The body and its energy fields respond more effectively to the application of gentle energy so we should not overload a person with sound but use it in a soft, focused way. Silence is the polar opposite to sound but is as equally important, with both needing to be utilised for healing and transformation. Silence is the space where the transformational work of frequency shifting happens and change occurs. The power to heal ultimately comes from within – silence helps to quieten the mind, promote deep relaxation, connect with our inner voice and activate the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
Therapeutic Tools
Provide a general summary of the services you provide, highlighting key features and benefits for potential clients.
Tuning Forks
Biosonics tuning forks support both energetic and physical healing. C (256Hz) & G (384Hz) creates the “perfect fifth” – a harmonic interval that calms the mind, balances chakras, and clears the aura. Otto forks (32Hz, 64Hz, 128Hz) are applied directly to the body to stimulate nitric oxide production, ease pain, improve mobility, release tension, restore balance, promote grounding, and invite deep relaxation.

Himalayan Bowls
Full moon Himalayan singing bowls carry a nurturing energy that invites deep tranquillity. Their rich, bell-like tones – layered with subtle harmonics – arise from a blend of metals, each resonating at a unique frequency. These bowls offer a gentle, soothing experience and are especially supportive for those navigating deep emotional challenges. Bowls placed directly on the body deliver a deeper sonic massage.
432hz quartz crystal bowls and harp are tuned to the body’s main chakra centres, with a thymus bell offering gentle immune-system support. Their pure, expansive tones penetrate deeply to surface and shift energetic patterns. These instruments can support profound transformation, though their intensity may feel strong for those emotionally sensitive or navigating a busy, stressful period.

Gongs
Reiki Drum
Other Therapeutic Percussion
A 36" Paiste symphonic gong and a 20" Meinl Flower of Life wind gong produce rich, layered harmonics connected to the primordial sound of OM. Their expansive, ethereal tones resonate through the whole body, entrain brainwaves into meditative states, clear stagnant energy, and support emotional release. Gongs offer a powerful, immersive experience that promotes deep physical and energetic healing.
Reiki Drum combines rhythm with Reiki energy, using the steady, grounding beat of the drum to entrain brainwaves into meditative states. Vibrations move gently through the body, supporting the release of tension and encouraging clarity, balance, and deep relaxation. This technique creates a focused, restorative space where the mind can settle and the body can soften into its own natural rhythm.
Percussion instruments are woven into sessions to support grounding, transitions, and energetic release. Melodic sounds such as the Sansula, Om Wah Wah pipe, and chimes bring lightness and uplift, while nature-inspired rhythmic tools like the rain stick, seed chimes, and thunder tube offer steady, earthy grounding with a cleansing effect. The hypnotic drone of the Shruti box entrain brainwaves into meditative states.
Session guide
What is the difference between a one-to-one and a group sound healing session?
A one‑to‑one session offers a deeply personal and introspective experience. The session is tailored to your preferences, sensitivities, and needs, with instruments chosen specifically for you. Targeted healing can address particular areas of tension or imbalance, and certain instruments may be placed directly on the body to enhance the therapeutic effect. This setting allows for a heightened state of relaxation, self‑awareness, and energetic release.
A group session is less personalised, but the shared energy of the group creates a powerful sense of unity and connection. The collective resonance can amplify the vibrations and support a deeper state of relaxation. Group sessions also offer the chance to connect with others who share an interest in holistic wellbeing. Private group sessions can be tailored to the group's needs and intentions, and group work is often more affordable and accessible.
Whether you choose a one-to-one or group session depends on your preferences, your needs, and the type of experience you're seeking on your healing journey. Both offer unique benefits for your wellbeing. You can visit the Services page to explore the healing sessions I offer.
How will I feel during and after a sound healing session?
Sound healing helps you reconnect with your innate healing potential, and the process unfolds at your own pace. Most people feel deeply relaxed during and after a session. When the body relaxes, the nervous system softens, the immune system is supported, and the body becomes more able to heal itself. Your openness and willingness to engage with your own healing can gently shape how the experience unfolds.
Many people report an expanded state of awareness, especially during the periods of silence. Clients often describe seeing colours, images, or memories; feeling sensations such as heat, coolness, stomach gurgling, twitches, tingling, ripples of energy, or a floaty sensation; or experiencing emotional release such as tears or joy. These are all natural signs of energetic movement and rebalancing.
Sound healing can influence the whole being – physical, emotional, and mental. After sessions, clients have reported reduced pain, hormonal shifts, improved sleep, increased energy, a brighter mood, and a greater sense of empowerment. While most people have a positive experience, deeper emotions may occasionally surface, such as sadness, grief, or old memories. As the body clears stagnant energy, temporary sensations like headaches, aches, dizziness, or nausea can also occur.
I hold a safe, supportive space for anything that arises during your session. You are always welcome to share what you’re experiencing, and you will never be rushed or judged. At the same time, it’s important that you feel ready for positive change and have the appropriate support around you afterwards, especially if strong emotions surface.
After a session, there will be a period of gentle integration. For some people, old symptoms or emotions may briefly reappear as the body clears stagnant energy, and occasionally things may feel a little more intense before they settle. This is a natural part of the rebalancing process and usually lasts 2–3 days. During this time, drinking plenty of water and resting when you can will support your system as it recalibrates. If you live with mental health challenges and find that difficult emotions linger after a session, please reach out to your doctor or mental health professional for additional support.
How often should I experience sound healing?
Sound healing is an individual experience, so there’s no set number of sessions you should have. Many clients prefer monthly sessions, while others come more or less frequently – it’s completely personal. Most people find that more than one session is helpful, as healing unfolds gradually and the body often needs time to return to balance. Regular sessions can support momentum, integration, and ongoing wellbeing, especially during times of stress or transition. Ultimately, your intuition is the best guide. Come whenever you feel drawn; your system will let you know when it’s time. Because sound healing continues to integrate after a session, it’s not recommended to attend more than one session within the same week.
Safety & Suitability
Is sound healing safe and suitable for everyone?
Sound healing (including Reiki Drum Technique) is widely recognised as a safe, low‑risk holistic therapy, but there are important guidelines to ensure your wellbeing. Sound healing is intended to complement medical care, not replace it. You should never stop or alter prescribed medication without guidance from your doctor. A sound healer is not a medical professional and will not diagnose or treat any illness. If you have a medical condition, please seek advice from a qualified healthcare practitioner. If you rely on life‑saving medication such as an asthma inhaler, EpiPen, or insulin, please bring it with you to your session.
Sound healing may not be suitable for everyone. You are responsible for your own wellbeing, and if you have a medical condition and are unsure whether sound healing is appropriate for you, please contact me with any concerns and consult your doctor for professional medical advice. The following guidance applies to both one‑to‑one and group sessions.
Sound healing is NOT recommended (I will not treat you) if you:
Are in your first trimester of pregnancy
Have Epilepsy or experience seizures
Have a severe mental illness such as Psychosis, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia
Have broken or fractured a bone within the last 3 months
Have received a hip or joint operation within the last 6 months
Please consult your doctor before attending sound healing if you:
Are pregnant (second or third trimester)
Have a mental health condition such as PTSD, anxiety or depression
Have Ménière's disease, tinnitus or an ear infection
Have metallic rods, pins, staples or screws in your body
Have a cardiac pacemaker, defibrillator, artificial heart valve, cardiac arrhythmias, stent or carotid stenosis
Have a deep brain stimulation (DBS) device or shunt
Sound healing instruments will not be placed directly on or close to the body if you:
Are pregnant
Have received surgery in the past 3 months
Have a pacemaker, defibrillator, stent or shunt
Have metallic implants or artificial joints
Have Osteoporosis
Have Cancer
Have chronic inflammatory conditions such as Crohn's disease or colitis
Have open wounds
Have deep vein thrombosis or known thrombi
Have an inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema
Sound healing is a deeply immersive, full‑body listening experience and can still be beneficial for those with limited hearing, as the vibrations are felt throughout the body. If you wear a hearing aid, certain frequencies may cause buzzing or whistling, so you may wish to turn it off or remove it for comfort.
For children under 16, written permission from a parent or guardian is required, and they must remain in the room throughout the session. Children aged 10 and over are welcome at group events if they can remain quiet for the duration. Children of any age are welcome at private group sessions.
Why is sound healing not suitable for everyone?
Sound healing has been used for centuries and offers many benefits, but research into potential risks is limited. For this reason, it’s important to exercise caution and seek medical advice if you have a health condition and are unsure whether sound healing is appropriate for you. Below are some reasons why precautions are necessary:
Pregnancy – The first trimester carries a higher risk of miscarriage. At any stage, sound is amplified for the baby, so prolonged exposure to loud or continuous sounds is not advised.
Epilepsy or seizures – Vibrations may trigger sound‑induced seizures in susceptible individuals.
Mental health – Sound healing can bring deep memories or emotions to the surface, so it’s important to feel able to manage these experiences..
Recent fractures or surgery – Vibrations may stimulate tissues and bones, potentially interfering with the healing process.
Meniere's disease, tinnitus or an ear infection – Symptoms may temporarily worsen.
Metal implants or medical devices – Strong vibrations may interfere with medical devices or cause metal implants to shift. For this reason, instruments will never be placed directly on the body or within 20cm of any implant or device.
Additional considerations
Sound healing often brings a deep sense of relaxation, so it’s best to avoid driving long distances or returning to demanding work immediately afterwards. Staying hydrated will support your body as it processes and integrates energetic shifts. Alcohol and recreational drugs can disrupt the body’s natural equilibrium and weaken the energy field, so it’s recommended to avoid these for at least 24 hours before and after a session to help you receive the full benefit of the treatment.
