What Is Reiki?

Introduction

Reiki (pronounced 'Ray Kee') is an ancient energy healing technique rediscovered in Japan by Mikao Usui in the 1920s. The term Reiki is derived from two Japanese words: “Rei” meaning “wisdom of the universe” and “Ki” meaning “life-force energy”. Reiki can be defined as ‘life-force energy guided by universal wisdom’ or ‘spiritually guided life-force energy’. It is not connected to any religion or belief system and is open to everyone, regardless of culture, faith, or personal beliefs.

Ki (also known as Qi, Chi, Prana) is a vital, life-sustaining energy which flows through all living things. It moves within the physical body through pathways called chakras and meridians, and around us in a field of energy called the aura, nourishing the organs and cells of our body. When the flow of Ki becomes disrupted, illness can arise. Because Ki is responsive to our thoughts and emotions, prolonged stress, fear, or negative patterns can restrict this natural flow. Reiki offers a gentle yet powerful way of reconnecting with high‑vibrational energy guided by a higher intelligence. It knows exactly where to go and how to respond, dissolving energetic blockages and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Reiki is a safe, natural, and deeply effective healing modality that can support a wide range of physical and psychological conditions. It works at the root of imbalance, supporting recovery on all four levels – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – and adapts to give each person exactly what they need in that moment. Alongside easing pain and restoring function, Reiki often brings greater clarity, emotional balance, and an improved sense of wellbeing. It is unusual for Reiki not to be helpful in some way.

Session guide

What is the difference between 'hands-on' and remote Reiki healing?

During a studio session, I place my hands lightly on or just above your body in a series of specific positions, allowing Reiki to flow through my hands to where it’s needed. This supports the release of stress, replenishes depleted energy, and activates the body’s own natural healing abilities. All that’s required to receive Reiki is a willingness to receive. A sense of openness to change can also be helpful, but no particular belief system is needed.

Remote Reiki (distance healing) works in exactly the same way as an in‑person session and is equally effective. Reiki is not limited by time or space – energy can be channelled across any distance. Before your session, it can be helpful to hold the intention: “I am open to receive whatever I may need at this moment in my life.” I connect with your energy using your name and location, and the Reiki flows to you in the way your system needs most.

Whether you experience Reiki in person or remotely depends on your preferences, your circumstances, and the type of support you’re seeking on your healing journey. Both approaches offer unique benefits and can bring deep rest, clarity, and energetic balance. You can visit the Services page to explore the healing sessions I offer.

How will I feel during and after a Reiki healing session?

During a Reiki session, you may notice sensations such as warmth, coolness, or gentle tingling wherever my hands are placed. Some people experience colours, dream‑like imagery, or the resurfacing of long‑forgotten memories. Emotional release – whether tearful, joyful, or simply a softening – is also common. Occasionally the body may twitch or jerk as energy begins to move. These responses are all normal and simply indicate that Reiki is working through areas of energetic tension or stagnation.

You may also experience none of these sensations, simply feeling deeply calm, peaceful, and relaxed. A state of profound rest allows physical, mental, and emotional stress to soften and leave the body, restoring balance and a sense of wellbeing. Reiki works across all four levels – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – and adapts so that each person receives exactly what they need in that moment.

I hold a safe, supportive space for anything that arises during your session. You are always welcome to share what you’re experiencing, and you will never be rushed or judged. At the same time, it’s important that you feel ready for positive change and have the appropriate support around you afterwards, especially if strong emotions surface.

After a session, there will be a period of gentle integration. For some people, old symptoms or emotions may briefly reappear as the body clears stagnant energy, and occasionally things may feel a little more intense before they settle. This is a natural part of the rebalancing process and usually lasts 2–3 days. During this time, drinking plenty of water and resting when you can will support your system as it recalibrates. If you live with mental health challenges and find that difficult emotions linger after a session, please reach out to your doctor or mental health professional for additional support.

How often should I experience Reiki healing?

Reiki is an individual experience, so there’s no set number of sessions you should have. Many clients prefer monthly sessions, while others come more or less frequently – it’s completely personal. Most people find that more than one session is helpful, as healing unfolds gradually and the body often needs time to return to balance. Regular sessions can support momentum, integration, and ongoing wellbeing, especially during times of stress or transition. Ultimately, your intuition is the best guide. Come whenever you feel drawn; your system will let you know when it’s time. Because Reiki healing continues to integrate after a session, it’s not recommended to attend more than one session within the same week.

Safety & Suitability

Is Reiki healing safe and suitable for everyone?

Reiki is widely recognised as a safe, low‑risk holistic therapy, but there are some important guidelines to ensure your wellbeing. Reiki is intended to complement medical care, not replace it. You should never stop or alter prescribed medication without guidance from your doctor. As a Reiki Practitioner, I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and if you have any health concerns, you should seek advice from a qualified medical professional. If you rely on life‑saving medication – such as an asthma inhaler, EpiPen, or insulin – please bring it with you to your session.

If you are taking medication for a long‑term condition and receiving regular Reiki treatments, it’s advisable to have routine check‑ins with your doctor. As your system rebalances, your medical team may need to review or adjust your treatment plan.

Additional considerations

Reiki often brings a deep sense of relaxation, so it’s best to avoid driving long distances or returning to demanding work immediately afterwards. Staying hydrated will support your body as it processes and integrates energetic shifts. Alcohol and recreational drugs can disrupt the body’s natural equilibrium and weaken the energy field, so it’s recommended to avoid these for at least 24 hours before and after a session to help you receive the full benefit of the treatment.
